This weeks article Navigating Genres by Kerry Dirk talks about the characteristics of genres and how genres change over time. He starts off the article by stating how the genre of country music is based on certain words, phrases, and style of music. ” But what would happen if I wanted to write a country song that didn’t do any of the above things?” (Pg. 250) I think this explains what we as a society look perceive what genre groups certain things into. Music is something that genre is very important to apply too. There are certain words and phrases that today would be classified under a certain genre, for example an orchestra would be classified as Classical music. I think Dirk is trying to get out attention by saying we done have to abide by these certain classifications, because genre can be a whole lot more then what it can be.
“In other words, knowing what a genre is used for can help people to accomplish goals, whether that goal be getting a job by knowing how to write a stellar resume, winning a person’s heart by writing a romantic love letter, or getting into college by writing an effective personal statement.” (Pg. 253) Know what genre is and what it can be used for is something that is important to get down just like Dirk says, having an understanding about what genre is can help you develop yourself and also be able to express yourself to others. Having an understanding of genre can help you immensely throughout life. Genre can shape how you feel and how you live your everyday life.
The only question that I have about genre is that is there a genre for everything you do in life? I know that there are a lot of genres out there but I would think that there is something for everything.
