Role of Reflection

There are two different types of thinking, the first one is novice thinking. This thinking is of someone that is just starting out to begin to handle the ropes of something that they doing which could be work or for school as well. The other type of thinking is someone that has expert thinking of a subject. This is when someone can easily recognize a certain subject and be able to apply it within their own lives. There can be some signs in someone that is a novice si that when they talk about a certain subject they will say umm or uhh a lot, as they need sometime to grasp the knowledge they are talking about.

There are some areas that I still need to grasp is that of my new job as a flight instructor. I am a novice the way someone teaches to someone else and for them to be able to grasp the knowledge that they need to have. As I can still teach and be able to train a student effectively, I need to work on how I communicate my knowledge to others more effectively. I know how to fly an aircraft very well and how to grasp the knowledge of aviation and I think the way that I can help myself with such a task is to keep exercising with myself to be able to communicate more effectively.

I think that a self reflection on not only yourself, but to also reflect on what you have done in your life as well. I think that reflecting is very important for your psychological health. To reflected on how you can better yourself and take the time to think about how your life is right now and how make things better is something that is needed in everyone.

Yes, I think that one thing that we haven’t discussed is the challenges in the way that we can develop our expertise in our lives. Being aware that there are challenges in life that will hinder your process of becoming more of an expert of a subject and also there are ways that can hinder your teaching ability as well. This can commonly be called a learning plateau this is where someone has been on the upside of learning and then they hit a point where they cant learn anymore then start to plateau out on their learning.

  1. Sam,
I enjoyed right of the bat that you defined a novice and an expert so anyone who wasn’t in this class would know what you are talking about. When it comes to teaching anyone something yourself it can be very difficult. I know for me I would always try and show them tiny tricks I had but I am sure you do not want to make any shortcuts in aviation. You bring up a good point about learning plateaus and I think everyone at some point hits them. Sometimes it is involuntary where you just can’t take in anymore knowledge about a subject. Other times it is voluntary where you may just be worn down from learning about the same thing over and over again. I think being able to overcome those plateaus is a huge part of success in life. Nice post!
