Discourse Communities

For this week I did not have an inkling of what a discourse community was, but after reading the two readings for this week I have a better understanding about what discourse communities are to not only me, but to many others around the world. A discourse community is a set of people that have a common objective or aim that share a similar language with in that certain group. This usually consists of a certain lingo that they use within their group to speak about certain things that pertain to a job or a certain skill set.

The elements that are required to have a discourse community is that firstly, you need to be in a certain profession or have a certain skill set. My example of a discourse community that I am in is being part of professional aviation. In order to be apart of professional aviation community, you must know what kind of knowledge that you have from aviation. A photographer that takes pictures of aircraft or someone that would consider themselves an enthusiast would probably not qualify to be in this certain discourse community for professional pilots. Secondly, you need people that have the knowledge level that you have to be able to be in such a community. They must have similar ideas and goals that they are all working towards. It can many different things that they are working towards, such as the educational side where they are helping each other out through their training, but it can also be a group which many different pilots are apart of to communicate with others about issues or questions that they have.

With discourse communities they are way more complex and interwoven then just normal communities. They all have a purpose to be in such a community and I thats where a lot of people get confused the most about these certain communities.
